Description: Just as a good host will offer a comfortable chair to his weary guest, so Jesus offers heavenly rest to the weary soul (Matthew 11:28-29). The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649–1712), whose initials are at the lower right, was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem and wrote the accompanying poem.
Motto: Weariness, hopes for rest.
Poem:
O Chair! for the service and comfort,
Of the flesh, that poor maggot-bag,
How your comfort should teach us,
To wish, for the weary Soul,
Against the time when the flesh falls,
A Heavenly Chair.
Who knows how many depart,
From the soft cushion of this Time,
To wander without Support or Rest,
Because the flesh sat so comfortably,
That he forgot the Soul’s Chair,
Until his departure and dying!
O Chair! On which one sits Blessedly,
Be thou our Goal and steady purpose.
