Description: This image depicts Simon of Cyrene being pressed into service to help Jesus bear the cross to Golgotha. In the top-left corner Jesus is taken before the high priest Caiaphas. At the top to the middle-left Jesus is tried before Pontius Pilate, the Prefect of Judea (r. 26-36 CE). At the top to the left in the middle Jesus is tried before Herod, the Tetrarch of Galilee (r. 4 BCE-39 CE). At the top to the right in the middle Pilate asks the crowd if they want Jesus or Barabbas. At the top to the middle-right Jesus is flogged by the Roman soldiers. In the top-right corner soldiers place a crown of thorns and a purple robe on Jesus as the mock Him. In the bottom-right corner Pilate washes his hands as Jesus is led away to be crucified. In the bottom-left corner Pilate presents Jesus to the crowd.
