Image Title: French Crowns, Half-Crowns, and Francs
Description: A collection of French coins ranging from a half-crown (or demi-écu) worth twenty-five sous, to an old crown worth sixty sous. Most of these coins bear the names of sixteenth-century kings: Francis I (r. 1515-1547), Henry II (r. 1547-1559), and Charles IX (r. 1560-1574). The large coins on the page's right side, however, appear to belong to older kings. Of these coins, the final two are especially noteworthy: the franc à pied, first minted by Charles V of France (r. 1364-1380; depicted standing with a sword and the Hand of Justice), and the franc à cheval, first minted by John II (r. 1350-1364; depicted riding a horse with sword raised).
