Description: A carpenter points to his drill while standing in front of his work bench. A hammer, a saw, a basket with nails, various other carpentry tools and pieces of wood lie on the ground next to the bench. A city scene can be seen in the background. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712), whose initials are at the lower right, was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem, as well as for the poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture text is 2 Corinthians 7:10.
Motto:
The fear for God’s wrath,
Must drill through thine Heart.
Poem:
If thou dost not let the Drill precede,
Then the wood shall be broken to pieces:
Drill through thine heart with thoughts,
Of pursuing Eternal Things,
So the nail of God’s Word,
Will fasten it properly where it belongs,
Or otherwise the heart must in the final days,
Bear the blows of the hammer,
When God speaks the stern Judgment,
Through which the Heart will break for Eternity,
And is thrown into Hell,
As an unworthy foot Stool,
Like a torn, spoilt piece of wood,
Not useful for the House built by God,
Where God, the Father, and the Son
Will live with their Holy Spirit,
The right Temple of the image,
That formerly had acted for Him,
To which they all will belong,
Who drill through the Heart with the fear of God,
And would rather bear that pain here,
Than be rejected there.
Drill then all days though thine Heart,
That way no blows of the hammer will harm thee.
