Author: Luiken, Jan, 1649-1712
Image Title: Historiated Title Page
Description: This title page features a beehive standing on a stone with the engraving "De ByeKorf des Gemoeds door Jan Luiken”. Two women next to the beehive observe the activities of the bees. The woman to the right is kneeling; behind her is a vase with flowers. The woman to the left is standing under the sun and is irradiated by an heavenly light, coming from a cloud with five cherubs and an angel that scatters flowers on the beehive below. Behind the standing woman, a child carries a vase with flowers. The page was etched and engraved by the Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712), introducing the first edition of his religious emblem book. His initials are at the lower right.
