Surrounding the veil are the symbols of the four gospels (an angel for Matthew, a lion for Mark, an ox for Luke, and an eagle for John) and a cross with the inscription, “INRI,” which abbreviates the title that Pilate posted on the cross, “Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews.”.
