Scripture Reference:

Description: Depiction of Simeon’s prophecy that Jesus will be a light to the Gentiles. At the head, encircled by a crown of thorns, is the monogram of Christ “IHS” with a cross on top of the H and three arrows below. Two angels blow trumpets above as the crown of thorns is held up by Peter, on the left who holds a key, and another man who holds a sword; both are situated on pedestals. At the base kneels the Pope with the triple tiered tiara and the church on the left and the kings of the world on the right. Between the Pope and the King are a globus cruciger and sword. Includes the monogram of the woodcutter, Christoffel van Sichem II (1577-1658) at the base; his son, Christoffel van Sichem III (1618-1659), may have collaborated with him on these images.
