Description: Jesus, crowned in thorns and bearing a cross, sits with chalice in hand and the instruments of his torture behind him: whipping pillar, spear, and reed with sponge soaked in spoiled wine. At his feet are a snake, a pair of dice, and the nails that held him to the cross. At the head is Moses with the Ten Commandments on the left and a skeleton with an arrow on the right. Behind Jesus are four men conspiring against him. Includes the monogram of the woodcutter, Christoffel van Sichem II (1577-1658); his son, Christoffel van Sichem III (1618-1659), may have collaborated with him on these images. This image also includes the initials of the engraver (DB), and an engraver’s knife.
