Image Title: Saint Marinus
Description: This image comes from “Oraculum Anachoreticum,” dated 1600, bound with “Solitudo, sive, Vitae patrum eremicolarum”. Saint Marinus (4th c.) is shown cutting stone at Monte Titano (where he is reputed to have built a chapel and a monastery) on the island of San Marino, which was named for him. Saint Marinus is shown with his attribute a stonemason’s hammer, since he was reputed to have been a stonemason before becoming a hermit. The names of the artist responsible for the design, Maarten De Vos, and the engraver, Raphael Sadeler I, are at the lower left.
