Description: This image comes from “Trophaeum Vitae Solitariae,” dated 1598, bound with “Solitudo, sive, Vitae patrum eremicolarum”. Saint John lived in a cave and knelt so much in prayer that he was unable to stand upright. The artist responsible for the design was Maarten De Vos, but the engraving for the volume was done by Raphael Sadeler I, whose names are at the lower left.
