Description: This image comes from “Trophaeum Vitae Solitariae,” dated 1598, bound with “Solitudo, sive, Vitae patrum eremicolarum”. Saint Theodore the Studite (759-826) was a Byzantine Greek monk. His letter suggesting monastery reform rules is one of the first recorded stands against slavery. Here, he appears in chains, carrying a cross. The artist responsible for the design was Maarten De Vos and the engraver, Johannes Sadeler I (Jan Sadeler), whose names are at lower left.
