Description: This image comes from “Trophaeum Vitae Solitariae,” dated 1598, bound with “Solitudo, sive, Vitae patrum eremicolarum”. Saints Euthymius the Great (377–473) and Theoctistus (died 451), both hermits, are shown living in a cavern in the wilderness, while in the background figures are building a structure. The artist responsible for the design was Maarten De Vos and the engraver was Johannes Sadeler I (Jan Sadeler), whose names are at the lower right.
