Image Title: Saint John of Egypt

Description: Saint John of Egypt (d. 394) or Saint John in Lyco may be the figure shown here. However, there are two hermits by the name of John in the Solitudo and their identification is difficult. Saint John of Egypt was to have withdrawn from a monastery to live in a mountain, Lycus or Lyco. The artist responsible for the design was Maarten De Vos, but the engraving for the volume was done by Johannes Sadeler I (Jan Sadeler) and Raphael Sadeler I, whose surname is at the lower left.
