Author: David, Jan, 1545?-1613
Image Title: Original Sin
Scripture Reference:
Description: The serpent tempts Eve to partake of the forbidden fruit as Adam sits nearby; to the left, gambling, leisure, suicide, murder and perhaps drunkenness are depicted as the consequences of the sin in the garden. The Latin superscription reads, "Three, bringing disaster to souls," and the text below, "Which wise man thrown headlong by greed brings death [the underworld] to us? Take heed: Example: the leadership and society of evil ones." The banner across the image cites the Vulgate of Proverbs 1:14, "We may share a common purse.” The numeral, 5, has been placed in the upper right to indicate its plate number within a series of illustrations.
