Book Title: Pauli Iovii Novocomensis episcopi Nucerini Vitae illustrium virorum : tomis duobus comprehensae, & proprijs imaginibus illustratae

Author: Giovio, Paolo, 1483-1552

Image Title: Portrait of Pope Adrian VI

Description: A portrait of Pope Hadrian VI (r. 1522-1523). In the upper right corner is the coat of arms of Pope Hadrian VI, which contains the crossed keys to the kingdom of heaven and the papal triple tiara, symbols characteristic of all papal coats of arms, as well as three wolf’s hooks in the upper left and lower right quarters and a crowned lion in the upper right and lower lefts quarters. The wolf’s hooks probably signal a connection to the shipbuilding trade.
