Image Title: Portrait of William G. Crocker (1805-1844)
Description: Crocker was born at Newburyport, Massachusetts. Experiencing religious conversion at the age of 20, he became a member of the Baptist Church of Newbury. Deciding to enter the ministry, he made several attempts to begin theological studies and finally entered the Newton Theological Institution ca. 1830. It was here that he began to think about missionary work. He was ordained in 1834 and set off for Africa in 1835. By 1841, he had reduced to writing the language of the Bassas, among whom he served, prepared schoolbooks, and had the Gospels of Matthew and John almost ready for the press. But his health was failing, and in 1841 he returned to America. In 1844 he returned to Africa but died as soon as the ship reached its destination.
