Pitts Theology Library Archives and Manuscripts Department
About the Department
The Archives and Manuscripts Department of Pitts Theology Library houses unique archival and manuscript collections relating to Methodism in the South, the history of Christianity in South Africa, British religious history, hymnody, and the Reformation. The department is the repository for the records of the Candler School of Theology, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church, the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and the American Academy of Religion. Among the manuscript collections maintained by the archives department are Candler School of Theology faculty papers; sermons; papers of missionaries in South Africa, Korea, China, and Japan; papers of nineteenth and twentieth century British clergy; and manuscripts of hymnals and sacred music.
The mission of the department is:
- To preserve and makes accessible the processed archives and manuscript collections in its holdings
- To work with staff and faculty at the Candler School of Theology, the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church (U.S.), the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the American Association of Pastoral Counselors, and the other organizations for whom the Pitts Theology Library is the designated repository to ensure the timely and organized transfer of records to the Archives
- To support the teaching mission of the Candler School of Theology and the Graduate Division of Religion by offering class presentations on using archives material for research papers, theses, and dissertations.
