Image Title: Esau’s Birthright
Scripture Reference:
Description: Esau (right), famished by a recent hunting expedition, agrees to sell his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew and some bread. The artist’s or engraver’s monogram (LG) has been placed in the lower right corner of the woodcut above an engraver’s knife. Additionally, this image is flanked by Eve in the garden (left, serpent in the tree overhead) and a female figure, Ecclesia, representing the Church, with the Eucharistic chalice in one hand, the cross (perhaps alluding to John the Baptist as proto-evangelist) in the other, and the bronze serpent (cf. Numbers 21) lifted up overhead.
