Scripture Reference:

Description: A man shows his companion his left gloved hand. The scene is set in a rural landscape with a farm, farm animals, a river and a church across the river. The Dutch artist and poet Jan Luiken (1649-1712), whose initials are at the lower right, was responsible for drawing and etching this emblem, as well as for the poem that accompanies it (below). The attendant Scripture text is Acts 17:27-28.

Everything that is Noble on Earth,
Is for the Eye Concealed.

The life viewed by the Eye,
However fast and fine in its movements,
Is not the true life;
That lies behind it.
Invisible Something that commands all,
And carries all in thy power,
Thou art the Hand that moves all,
What is Visible or occurs in thoughts.
Since the mind then clearly perceives
How what is hidden for the eyes,
Far surpasses what is revealed,
In Nobility and in power,
So should each one turn to his Heart,
And deeper to the bottom within,
To love what is not seen,
Above all that is visible.
It is too pure for the Animal Eye,
But when the film has been removed,
Then that, from which the visible All has come,
Will not be invisible.
Nature is then like the Glove,
That lay as if dead,
Unless the operation of God’s hand,
Brought up a glimpse of movement.
