Historical Note: The Association of Professional Chaplains formed in 1998 as a
result of the merger of two predecessor organizations: the College of Chaplains
(formerly known as the Association of Protestant Hospital Chaplains and the
Chaplains' Division of the American Protestant Hospital Association) and the
Association of Mental Health Clergy (formerly known as the Association of
Mental Hospital Chaplains).
The College of
Chaplains grew out of a gathering of seventeen hospital chaplains at the annual
meeting of the American Protestant Hospital Association (APHA) in 1946. A
survey of general hospitals conducted in 1945 by the APHA Commission to Study
Religious Work in Hospitals had revealed that only 8% employed professional
chaplains. The commission recommended that the APHA amend its constitution and
by-laws to allow for a section of chaplains within the organization. The
Chaplains' Division (sometimes referred to in records as the Chaplains' Section
or the Association of Protestant Hospital Chaplains) formed as a result.
Russell L. Dicks served as the organization's first president. By 1950, the
organization had established professional standards and a certification process
for chaplains. In 1968, the Chaplains' Division was renamed the College of
Chaplains. Membership grew rapidly in the years following the name change, soon
reaching 900. In 1971, the organization employed its first full-time executive
director, Rev. Charles Phillips.
The Association of
Mental Hospital Chaplains (AMHC) was founded in 1948 at a meeting of the
American Psychiatric Association. J. Obert Kempson, a chaplain at South Carolina State Hospital, was
its first president. Over the next two decades the AMHC developed the first
inter-faith certification process for professional chaplains, certifying
Catholic, Protestant, and Jewish chaplains. In the early 1970s the organization
changed its name to the Association of Mental Health Clergy. By 1976 the AMHC
had over 500 members. A part-time executive director, Rev. George Doebler, was employed by the association.
By the early 1990s,
membership in the AMHC had declined. The College of Chaplains invited the AMHC
to consider a partnership, and a transition team was formed. In 1996 the
College of Chaplains became independent of its parent organization, the
American Protestant Hospital Association. This was the culmination of a
decades-long trend toward greater independence for the College of Chaplains.
The College and the AMHC formally merged at a joint annual conference in 1998,
forming the Association of Professional Chaplains. According to its mission
statement, the APC is "a multifaith association
established to certify and serve its membership and to promote professional
chaplaincy."

Scope and Content Note: This collection consists of an older version of this
record group, which was comprised of boxes 1 through 3, and more recently
acquired material, comprised of boxes 4-14. For reasons of completeness, the
older scope and content note covering the first three boxes is reprinted here,
followed by a note covering the remainder of the collection.

The bulk of the records in this collection concern the history of the College
of Chaplains, formerly the Chaplains' Division of the American Protestant
Hospital Association (APHA). The archives of the Association of Professional
Chaplains' other predecessor, the Association of Mental Health Clergy (AMHC),
are maintained by the American Psychiatric Association.
The record group
includes a book of APHA Chaplains' Division minutes dated 1946-1964; an
incomplete run of conference proceedings from 1973-1983; and a file of various
historical documents from both the APHA and the College of Chaplains from 1948
to 1991. This historical file was originally contained in a three-ring binder,
but was removed and placed in two acid-free folders for preservation reasons. The
original order of the file has been maintained, and there is a table of
contents in Box 2, Folder 11.
There are several
folders with material on the cooperation between the APHA and the College of
Chaplains, which began in 1993 and culminated with the formation of the
Association of Professional Chaplains in 1998. These include newsletters and
annual meeting materials. Of particular interest are items related to the 50th
anniversary of the College of Chaplains in 1996, including items from a display
commemorating the anniversary, photographs, and programs from the 1996 annual conference.
The record group
also includes twelve VHS videotapes with recordings from 1993-1996. Included
are recordings of annual conference sessions as well as oral history interviews
of individuals who were leaders of the APC's predecessor organizations. There
is also a 21 minute video on the history of the College of Chaplains, titled
"Glimpses of Our Past: The College of Chaplains' 50th Anniversary,

The remainder of this collection contains a great breadth of material
supplementary to the historical file and College of Chaplains minutes in the
first three boxes. The boxes are divided below by series according to the
organization or sub-organization to which they pertain. There are four bodies
for which a great bulk of material has been acquired: The Association of Mental
Health Chaplains (AMHC), The American Protestant Hospital Association (APHA),
The College of Chaplains (COC), and the Council on Ministries in Specialized
Settings (COMISS). The contents of the boxes themselves have been left in their
original order; the inventory below will help guide you to the appropriate box.
Each series below corresponds either to the original record group (comprised
primarily of videotapes and a historical file), or to one of the above-listed
organizations (this material is the more recently acquired group). Each
organization (and series) has been subdivided according to the following
categories: Minutes, Meetings and Conventions, Committees and Task Forces,
Financial Material, Institutional Material, Legal Material, Other Material,
Membership, Articles/Studies/Surveys, Councils and Assemblies, Related Organizaions, and Correspondence. Other categories may
appear where appropriate.
This collection is extremely extensive, and neither time nor space permits an
exhaustive survey of the material included. In general, the material is
directly related to one of these institutions, primarily during the period
starting with the 1970s and going through the 1990s. The minutes, records of
conventions and meetings, committee documents, and newsletters are especially
extensive. If you are searching for a specific document that is not obviously
included in one of the categories listed above (categories such as minutes or
correspondence), searching the “other material” sub-series for a particular
organization may be a useful starting point.
