Historical Note

The Georgia United Methodist Pastors’ School began in 1924 as a joint effort of the North and South Georgia conferences of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South.  The purpose of the school is as follows:  "Living in an hour like the present and being a member of a profession crowded with many duties and touching every feature of life, it is absolutely essential to keep in touch with every modern movement and to learn, if possible, every new method which may contribute to general efficiency."  [WCA, 1924]  From 1924 to 1936 the school, which was held in the summer in Macon, Georgia, fulfilled this purpose as a ten day to two-week course of study for the undergraduate pastor.  In 1937, this course of study became the Candler Correspondence School and is now known as the Lay Pastors’ School at Candler.

Rather than abandoning the tradition of summer study, the Pastors’ school was transformed into a three to four day conference held at Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia, on issues faced by pastors in the North and South Georgia conferences.  During these sessions, the bishops from each conference presented their visions for the conference, outside preachers and professors were brought in to teach and preach, and multiple worship services were scheduled in order to facilitate spiritual renewal.  Further changes occurred in 1971, when the Pastors’ school was opened to pastors from the Georgia Conference of the Central Jurisdiction.  In 1988, the Georgia United Methodist Pastors’ School was discontinued.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of Board of Managers minutes, correspondence, promotional materials, financial records and evaluative information regarding the Pastors’ School.  The bulk of the information focuses on the Pastors’ school during the 1970’s.  Much of the correspondence is in reference to past and upcoming faculty at the school.  The promotional materials are brochures and newsletters sent to pastors in the Georgia conferences.  Financial records cover the years from 1975 to 1987.  The evaluative information consists of a questionnaire summary, the registrar’s reports for 1964 to 1972, and a pre-registration report.  In addition to these blocks of records, there are also miscellaneous records such as a constitution and by-laws, faculty invitations, schedule, and information on the office of the Dean.  There is a history of the school as well as short biographies of faculty who have participated in the school.  Also of note is the 1968 Joint resolution to the 1968 session of the Georgia, North Georgia, and South Georgia Annual Conferences.
