Historical Note

In the 1920's, clinical pastoral education was conceived by Richard C. Cabot, a prominent physician and active Unitarian layman in Boston, as a method of learning pastoral practice in a clinical setting under supervision. The concept was enlarged by Anton T. Boisen to include a case-study method of theological inquiry--a study of "living human documents." As clinical education developed, other leaders opened the doors to the integration into pastoral practice of knowledge from medicine, psychology, and other behavioral sciences.

The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education was formed in 1967 by the merger of several groups instrumental in the development and practice of clinical pastoral education. Among these groups were the Institute of Pastoral Care, Inc.; the Council for Clinical Training, Inc.; the Association of Clinical Pastoral Educators; and the Lutheran Council in the U.S.A., Clinical Pastoral Education Functions of Certification and Accreditation. The Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, recognized as a national accreditation body by the United States Office of Education, has become the standard-setting, accrediting, certifying resource agency in the field of clinical pastoral education. It accredits institutions, agencies, and parishes as training centers to offer programs of clinical pastoral education and certifies supervisors to conduct these programs.

Associations for Clinical Pastoral Education have been organized in a number of countries such as England and the Philippines. In the United States, nine regions are represented on the Board of Representatives of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education: the Northeast, the East, the Mid-Atlantic, the Southeast, the East Central, the North Central, the South Central, the Southwest, and the Pacific regions. The Southeast region is comprised of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, and Tennessee.

Scope and Content Note

The records of the Southeast Region of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education consist of correspondence, minutes, reports, newsletters, and other materials, relating to the development and work of the Southeast region of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, the Council for Clinical Training, and the national Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. These records have been arranged into five series:

  1. The Council for Clinical Training, Inc.
  2. The National Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  3. General records of the Southeast region of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  4. Committees of the Southeast Region of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education
  5. Accreditation files of the Southeast Region of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education

The first series contains records from the Council for Clinical Training, a parent organization of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. These records span from 1941 to 1962 and include correspondence, case histories of patients, newspaper clippings, brochures and other materials are included. The bulk of the Council materials is correspondence to and from J. Obert Kempson concerning the inception and development of a pastoral counseling program at the South Carolina State Hospital in Columbia. Correspondents include Seward Hiltner, Robert E. Brinkman, Armen D. Jorjorian, and Frederick Kuether, Jr. Several newspaper clippings and brochures are included among the publicity materials and have been placed with the audiovisual materials. Case histories of patients, many with mental health problems, are also among the Council materials. In an effort to protect the confidentiality of these records, the use of the case histories has been restricted. An alphabetical listing of the case histories is available to authorized users.

The second series contains files related to the national Association for Clinical Pastoral Education. The bulk of the national ACPE materials are publications, including issues of ACPE News and copies of ACPE's directories of certified CPE supervisors.

The third series, administrative records of the Southeast region of the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, includes correspondence, minutes, newsletters, financial records, and other materials, dated from 1967 to 1986. Numerous chaplains and members of the association are represented in the regional and the committee-level correspondence, including J. Obert Kempson, Frank T. Cook, E. Augustus Verdery, Charles E. Hall, Jr., Jasper N. Keith, Jr., Henry T. Close, John M. Gessell, William C. Mays, George P. Dominick, and O. Chappell Wilson, Jr. Also included in these records are histories of the centers and the personnel records of the supervisors of pastoral education programs in the Southeast region, both arranged alphabetically. The personnel records also remain confidential, and their use is restricted.

The fourth series, which contains correspondence, minutes, reports, newsletters, and other documents related to the committee and task force work of the Southeast region. This series is arranged alphabetically by the title of the committee and the by type of material or file title. The most complete committee records exist for the Certification and Accreditation Committee, later separated into the Accreditation Committee and the Certification Committee. Records for other committees, including Executive, Historical, Finance, and Judiciary, are also available, but are not as complete.

Files related to the process of accrediting individual centers for clinical pastoral education comprise the fifth series. Included are correspondence files and reports. Both of these sets of files are arranged alphabetically by center name. At the end of the series are correspondence files associated with centers where clinical pastoral education programs were discontinued. These discontinued center files are also arranged alphabetically by facility name.

Audiovisual items, including photographs, videotapes, and audio cassettes, have been separated from the rest of the records and are found at the end of the record group.

Related holdings in the Archives and Manuscripts Department of Pitts Theology Library include the records of the national Association for Clinical Pastoral Education (RG 001) and the records of the North Central Region of the American Association for Pastoral Education (RG 042).
