CITATION: Audubon Forest United Methodist Church (Atlanta, Ga.) Records, RG 018, Archives and Manuscripts Dept., Pitts Theology Library, Emory University.
The Audubon Forest Methodist Church was organized in 1949 in one of the most prestigious neighborhoods, Cascade Heights, Atlanta. Under the ministry of Dr. Bevel Jones, its first pastor, the membership grew rapidly, reaching 91 within the first month of its existence. During the 1960's, however, this trend was reversed as a changing cultural environment claimed its toll in membership and financial support. When Audubon Forest disbanded in June 1982, Wallace Z. Wiggins, pastor of the church since 1963, donated the church's records to Pitts Theology Library. The church facilities were taken over by a Black congregation and named the Harry Hoosier United Methodist Church in honor of the Black companion of Francis Asbury and John Cook.
Reverend Wallace Z. Wiggins presented the records of the Audubon Forest United Methodist Church (1949-1982), to Pitts Theology Library as soon as the church disbanded. The collection consists of four series of materials. The first is correspondence consisting of one letter dated June 3, 1982. The second series contains membership records, membership rolls, baptism and preparatory rolls, and marriage and death records from 1949 to1972. The third series, conference records, consists of two volumes of official records: 1949 to1968 and 1968 to1981. The fourth series consists of printed church directories for 1973 and 1977 and one with no date. These materials will provide the researcher with insight into the cultural climate, tensions, and race relations of the 1960's and 1970's in Atlanta. It will also provide information concerning the history of the church, Methodist pastors Bevel Jones and Wallace Z. Wiggins, and information for genealogists.
