Historical Note

Trinity United Methodist Church had its beginnings as a mission Sunday School in the home Green B. and Martha Haygood in 1853. Trinity formally commenced in September 1854, as an offshoot of Wesley Chapel, now First United Methodist Church, on the south side of Atlanta. Trinity was first located on Capitol Square in a brick structure. In 1871, the church was moved to a new home on the southwest corner of Whitehall and Peters Streets (now Trinity Avenue), where it remained until 1911. The pulpit, altar rail, chairs, pews, and organ were brought in 1912 to its present location on the corner of Washington and Trinity Avenues.

Trinity has established several missions which have grown into churches including St. Paul, Walker Street or Mary Branan, Asbury, Grace, Park Street, Lakewood Heights, St. John's, and Nellie Dodd Memorial. Among the many notable persons who have influenced and been influenced by Trinity are Rev. Atticus G. Haygood (the son of Green B. and Martha Haygood); Miss Anna J. Muse, missionary to China; and and Miss Eva Foreman, missionary to Korea.

Scope and Content Note

The records of Trinity United Methodist Church include historical materials and rolls of members and guests. The historical materials provide an overview of the church's achievements from its beginnings in 1854 until 1979. The membership and guest rolls indicate the persons who have attended and participated in Trinity activities. These materials are arranged chronologically.

Included in the records are some of Trinity's publications. The publications are subdivided into bulletins, the Trinity Triangle, and the Trinity Evangel. Within the subdivisions, the publications are arranged chronologically. The bulletins provide the order of worship services from 1945 to 1986. The most complete documentation for the order of worship are for the years 1983-1985. Only two issues of the Trinity Triangle (1934, 1936) are included in the records. Issues of the Trinity Evangel, span from 1915 to 1986, with the most complete issues for 1982-1986.

Some of the administrative papers of Trinity are also found in the records, including minutes, reports, and other materials. Among the administrative records are the quarterly conference records, arranged chronologically from 1881 to 1940. Other records for groups and committees of the church are subdivided under the name of that group and then chronologically within that subdivision.

Among the miscellaneous materials documenting the history of Trinity are a gavel that was given to Mrs. T.E.Blackburn by Mrs. E.A. Hartsock, a framed certificate awarded to Trinity in 1972 by the Christian Council of Metropolitan Atlanta, Inc., and many pictures of the church and the persons who attended Trinity or participated in Trinity's programs.

With the records of Trinity, came some of the records of St. Luke's Methodist Episcopal Church, South including membership rolls, conference records, and other administrative records. These materials are similar in nature and arrangement to those of Trinity. However, much of these materials are extremely fragile and require special care and attention when handling.
