Historical Note

The Glenmary Research Center, a subsidiary of the Glenmary Home Missioners, was founded in 1966. Glenmary's primary purpose is to aid the Catholic Church's missionary movement in the rural areas of the United States. For a more complete history of the research center see the article "Glenmary Research Center: History of the Idea" by Louis McNeil in Series I, Box 1, Folder 1.

Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of the research files of the Glenmary Research Center office that was located in Atlanta, Georgia.  This office closed in 1998.  The records are arranged in four series.

Series 1: Institutional Files.
Series 2: Project Files.
Series 3: Publication Files.
Series 4: Oversize Publications.

Series 1 contains an account of the founding of Glenmary Research Center, an article by Louis McNeil, as well as the Center's organizational files. These organizational files consist of project cost analyses, located in the financial documents grouping and a progress report on the Town & Country Research Center dated 1 September 1972. Also included in this series is a collection of correspondence requesting information on workshops provided by Glenmary.

Series 2 has been divided into three subseries. Subseries 1, Numbered Projects, is arranged numerically by project number. Subseries 2, Unnumbered Projects, is arranged alphabetically. The project files in each of the first two subseries are arranged in the following descending order of priority: project development (project logs, project proposals, etc.); legal documents (publishing agreements, teaching appointments, copyright material, permission to publish, etc.); financial documents (cost estimates, invoices, purchase orders, etc.); minutes (meeting minutes of committees); correspondence; and project papers (working papers which include agenda, schedules, reports, data, questionnaires, notes and publications.) There are several gaps in the numerical sequence of project files, which correspond to missing projects.

Subseries 3 consists of data files from the 1980 Church Membership Study, a nationwide study of church membership by denomination coordinated by Glenmary. The data files are arranged alphabetically by name of denomination, with each denomination name preceded by a three-digit numerical code assigned by researchers. The data files contain statistical information on number of congregations, number of full members, and total number of adherents by state and county. Following the data files are files on denominations which did not participate in the study, as well as general correspondence with participants.

Series 3 contains copies of published works, for which Glenmary holds the copyright. These materials are divided into two subseries. Subseries 1, Numbered Publications, is arranged by project number. Subseries 2, Unnumbered Publications, is arranged alphabetically. Like Series 2, this series contains some missing project numbers.

Series 4 contains oversized publications, primarily maps.
