 Biographical Note

William (Bill) Mallard, Professor Emeritus of the Candler School of Theology, was born in 1927. He received a B.A. from Randolph-Macon College in 1949, a B.D. from Duke Divinity School in 1952, and a Ph.D. from Duke University in 1956. Mallard taught religion at Sweet Briar College from 1955-1957, then joined the Candler faculty in 1957 as Assistant Professor of Church History. An ordained United Methodist elder in the Virginia Conference, Mallard is a frequent speaker at churches, college and universities, and other venues.

Mallard is the author of The Reflection of Theology in Literature: A Case Study in Theology and Culture (1977) and Language and Love: Introducing Augustine's Religious Thought through the Confessions Story (1994). He and his wife, Gatra, have three children.

Scope and Content Note

The papers document Mallard’s career as Professor of Church History at the Candler School of Theology and Emory University’s Graduate Division of Religion. Included are course syllabi and lecture notes; subject files; notes from and copies of talks and sermons; and minutes and papers from interdepartmental Common Program Seminars in whuch Mallard participated. There are three boxes of files related to Candler School of Theology, Graduate Division of Religion, and university business, including faculty meeting minutes, committee minutes, and reports. Access to these materials is restricted due to the presence of student records and information on personnel decisions.

The papers also reflect Mallard’s interest in radical theology. In 1967, Emory University religion professor Thomas J.J. Altizer drew national attention after a Time cover story featured his “God is dead” theology. Mallard’s papers on radical theology include his correspondence with Altizer; his letter to Time in support of Altizer and letters received by Mallard following its publication; and papers written by other Candler faculty members.

Not included in the papers is documentation of Mallard’s education at Randolph-Macon College and Duke University, nor of the two years he spent teaching religion at Sweet Briar College. There very little on his teaching at Candler and the Graduate Division of Religion during the 1980s and 1990s. There are also no files related to Mallard’s two published books.

Series Descriptions

Series 1: Speaking Engagements, 1957-1986. 2.67 cubic ft. Arranged alphabetically.
Throughout his career, Mallard was a popular speaker for churches and other groups in Georgia, in his home state of Virginia, and beyond. The files in this series contain notes and correspondence related to talks and sermons delivered by Mallard. Most of these talks were given outside the Emory community, but there are also files for sermons Mallard gave at worship services in the Candler School of Theology chapel. The files are arranged alphabetically by Mallard’s original folder titles, most of which reflect the location where a particular talk was given.

Series 2: Virginia Conference, 1960-1995. .33 cubic ft. Arranged alphabetically.
Files related to Mallard’s membership in the Virginia Conference. They include reports required from Mallard as a minister appointed beyond the local conference; materials from Mallard’s speaking engagements at the Virginia Annual Conference; and subject files on Virginia colleges and universities.

Series 3: Radical Theology, 1960-1983, undated. .8 cubic ft. Arranged alphabetically.

This series includes correspondence between Altizer and Mallard; correspondence received by Mallard after a letter he wrote in support of Altizer was published by Time; copies of papers and other writings by Candler School of Theology faculty; and news clippings on Altizer and radical theology.

Series 5: Common Program Seminars, 1958-1977. 1.4 cubic ft. Arranged chronologically.
Common Program Seminars (often referred to in the papers by their course number, CP400) were interdepartmental seminars offered on a wide variety of topics in religion and theology. Topics included theology in America, secularization, revolution and the church, the function of the bible, evil, and the sources and functions of authority. The seminar format called for the presentation of a paper by a different faculty member each week, followed by discussion. This series includes course syllabi, copies of papers presented by Mallard and by others, and detailed minutes of seminar discussions.

Series 6: Courses Taught. 1958-1983. .8 cubic ft. Arranged alphabetically by course title.
Syllabi, lecture notes, bibliographies, and other supporting documents from classes taught by Mallard. Files are arranged alphabetically by course title, including the course area and number designation. Mallard taught in the areas of Christian thought, church history, and historical theology; specific course topics included the medieval church, the heritage of the Reformation, the history of the doctrine of the trinity, historiography, Christianity and literature, and African-American history. Mallard also frequently taught Candler’s introductory class in Christian thought.

Series 7: Graduate Division of Religion and University Business, 1959-1993, undated. .67 cubic ft. Arranged alphabetically.
Committee files, curriculum materials, student dissertation proposals, doctoral examinations, and other records of Mallard’s involvement in Graduate Division of Religion administration, particularly the Division’s church history department. Also found in this series are files related to the development and administration of the D.Min program, including the in-career program and the Florida-based extension program; the Doctor of Sacred Theology (S.T.D.) program; and the Master of Theological Studies (M.T.S.) program.
