Camp Glisson is a United Methodist retreat facility located in Dahlonega, Georgia. Its history as a Methodist institution began in 1926 when the Rev. Elbert Hale, pastor of the Hapeville M.E.C., S. in Hapeville, Georgia rented the facility for use as a summer camp for Methodist youth. At that time the area was known as Cane Creek Falls. He continued to administer the camp through 1930 when the Rev. Fred L. Glisson succeeded him as manager. Rev. Glisson continued in this position until 1944, often using his own funds to finance the operation of the camp. The camp was renamed Camp Glisson in his honor. A lake constructed in 1951 was named Lake Hale in honor of the camp founder.
During the 1930s the North Georgia Methodist Episcopal Conference gradually purchased the land and existing cabins from the Dahlonega Chamber of Commerce. In 1947 the Cane Creek Falls area was purchased from the Georgia Power Company. By 1953 the camp consisted of 175 acres. The camp program has continued to grow and Camp Glisson is now a year-round conference retreat center.
Jennifer J. Richardson is the author of Holy Dirt: Camp Glisson's Seventy-Five Years of Christian Education Outdoors: 1925-2000. She was a camper at Glisson as a child, and has been a cabin owner, a Leadership Team member, and a board member at the camp.
This collection consists of materials assembled by Jennifer J. Richardson while researching Holy Dirt, her book on Camp Glisson. Series 1 consists of files maintained by the manager of Camp Glisson on cabin owners from 1949-1990. These files contain mostly correspondence regarding the ownership and upkeep of cabins at Glisson. Series 2 contains research materials generated by Richardson, primarily notes from interviews with individuals on their involvement with Camp Glisson, conducted in the mid-1990s. The miscellaneous files in Series 3 include information on grounds fees (1965-1968) and loans (1951-1955) related to the camp.
The bulk of the collection consists of photographic images. For preservation reasons, negatives are stored separately from photographic prints. Series 4 contains over 1800 photographs from Camp Glisson. Many of these photographs are unidentified. The majority are group photographs of Glisson campers. Negatives, which are stored separately from the photographic prints for preservation reasons, are found in series 5. Many of these negatives do not correspond with prints in series 4, and no negatives exist for many of the series 4 prints. Series 6 contains color slides of Camp Glisson people and events from the 1960s through the 1990s. Most slides lack even basic information about when the image was taken. Also included in series 6 is a short 35mm film. The title written on the container that holds the film is “More Than a Week of Service.” This film was not played back during processing, and there is no further information about it.
