 Biographical Note

James E. Hankins, minister, was educated at Union Theological Seminary. He was a member of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. He died in 2002.

Scope and Content Note

The James E. Hankins papers are comprised mostly of typewritten notes and outlines for over 800 sermons. Hankins wrote these sermons in his capacity as minister in the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church. Hankins numbered each of his sermons, and his numerical order has been retained. An index to sermon titles, with Scripture citations included, is found as an appendix to this finding aid. Audio recordings of over 150 sermons are available as MP3 and WAV digital audio files on two recordable CD-ROMs. These sermons were recorded at Pulaski United Methodist Church and Bearden United Methodist Church between 1976 and 1984.

Also included with the sermons are other writings by Hankins, including "Problems of Worship in the Rural Church," (his master's thesis, written at Union Theological Seminary in 1946) and a history of Town and Country work in the Holston Conference. There are also subject files, which document Hankins' involvement in the Town and Country Commission of the Holston Conference and in the Lord's Acre stewardship program, as well as his interests in rural life and stewardship.

The collection also includes a copy of A Harmony of the Synoptic Gospels by Ernest DeWitt Burton and Edgar Johnson Goodspeed, with handwritten notes preceding the text.
