 Biographical Note

Mrs. R.B. Kirkpatrick was a leader of the Women’s Branch Alliance at the First Unitarian Church of New Orleans, Louisiana in 1955-1956.  She headed efforts to collects clothing and other goods to be sent on to Albert Schweitzer’s leprosy hospital in Lambaréné, Gabon, then known as French Equatorial Africa.  


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of two letters from workers at Dr. Albert Schweitzer’s leprosy hospital to Mrs. R. B. Kirkpatrick.  The first letter was written by Emma Haussknecht, an aide to Schweitzer,  and contains a personal postscript written in French by Dr. Schweitzer.  This letter, dated June 24, 1955, contains thanks for materials sent to the hospital as well as a description of the ongoing construction of housing and other additions to the hospital.  The second letter was written by Ari Silver, a nurse at Schweitzer’s hospital, on September 31, 1956.  Silver's letter conveys thanks for clothing sent to the hospital and informs Kirkpatrick of the death of Emma Haussknecht in June 1956.
