White Institute of Psychiatry in 1949, Clinebell pursued graduate studies at Columbia University.  He completed his Ph.D. in 1954.

Clinebell was a Methodist minister as well as a scholar.  He pastored churches in Indiana, Illinois, and New York from 1943 to 1957 while he was receiving clinical pastoral training in New York hospitals.  He was a lecturer in religious education at New York University from 1955 to 1957 before joining the faculty of the School of Theology in Claremont, California in 1959.  He is a member of the following professional societies: International Association of Group Psycho-therapy, American Association of Pastoral Counselors (diplomat; president, 1964-1965), American Association of Marriage Counselors (fellow), American Orthopsychiatric Association (fellow), American Society of Group Psychotherapy and Psychodrama, Association for Humanistic Psychology, and Phi Beta Kappa.

He wrote numerous books and articles, including several publications with his wife, Charlotte Holt Clinebell.  Books by Clinebell have been translated into German, Spanish, Dutch, Finnish, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.

Clinebell lived with his wife in Santa Barbara, California, until his death in 2005.  The couple had three children.
