Biographical Note
Bishop Joel Duncan McDavid served as bishop of the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1980 to 1984.  Previously he had been pastor of the Dauphin Way Church in Mobile, Alabama, and from 1968 to 1972 was secretary of the Committee on Restructure of Boards and Agencies for the Alabama-West Florida Conference.  He was first elected Bishop of the United Methodist Church by the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference in 1972.  During his tenure in Florida, Bishop McDavid was active in church extension and establishment of Spanish-speaking churches to fill the needs of South Florida's Hispanic population.  Bishop McDavid was transferred to the North Georgia Conference in 1980.
Scope and Content Note
The Joel McDavid papers consist of correspondence and official papers relating to the North Georgia Conference of the United Methodist Church from 1980-1984.  The papers are divided into two series.  Series 1 contains the correspondence between the Bishop, District Superintendents, and Pastors within the districts of the conference.  The folders are arranged alphabetically by district and the letters chronologically within the folders.  Series 2 contains subject files from the office of Bishop McDavid.  All efforts have been made to preserve the original folder titles from these office files.  Series 2 is divided into six subseries.  Subseries 2.1 contains correspondence and other material relating to the annual meetings of the North Georgia Conference in 1981, 1982 and 1983.  Subseries 2.2 concerns plans for the construction of a Methodist retreat and conference center at Simpsonwood between 1981 and 1984.  Subseries 2.3 contains the files of the various committees of the North Georgia Conference from 1980-1984, arranged alphabetically.  Subseries 2.4 includes the financial files of the Conference, also arranged alphabetically.  Subseries 2.5 contains invitations and correspondence relating to the Bishop's speaking engagements from 1980 to 1981, arranged chronologically.  Finally, Subseries 2.6 includes miscellaneous subject files of the North Georgia Conference, arranged alphabetically.
