Scope and Content Note

This bound volume consists of ninety-two pages of handwritten hymns, sermons, and one poem composed between 1705 and 1706.  Mr. Porter authored sixty hymns, with Mr. Spilsburey and Mr. Carver each contributing one.  The two sermons were written by Porter and Spilsburey.  The first is a Christmas sermon and the second was preached at the funeral of Mrs. Porter.  The poem was composed by Mr. Porter and begins each stanza with the letters A through Z.  The compositions are evangelical and take their subjects chiefly from biblical verses.
