This collection is comprised of the papers of William Mairis and his grandson, Henry Edwards Hale Mairis.  William Mairis was the son of Robert Mairis and studied at Exeter College, Oxford.  He received his BA in 1791, his MA in 1808, and his BD and DD in 1814.  On June 12, 1793, he married Ann Hartland, and the couple had several children, among them Valentine Hale Mairis, the father of Henry Edwards Hale Mairis.  Before his death on May 1, 1828, William served several positions within the Church of England, including chaplain to the Duke of Kent, rector of St. Peter in Wallingford, vicar of Bishop Lavington, and vicar of Bishop Wilts.

Henry Edwards Hale Mairis was born around the year 1820, the oldest son of Valentine Hale Mairis.  He studied at Caius College, Cambridge, and received his BA in 1844 and his MA in 1847.  He married Georgina Halliday in June of 1863.  Ordained as a priest in 1846, he subsequently served as the curate of numerous parishes in England.  He died January 28, 1911.
