The volume is a small bound manuscript, approximately 130 pages long.  It contains a series of meditations, each of which is titled according to the subject of the meditation.  Though the author is unknown, the content of the manuscript suggests that he or she was most likely Roman Catholic.  Further evidence of this identification with the Roman Catholic Church is presented by the bookplate inside the volume, which reads, "Ex Libris Monasterri Sanctæ Scholasticæ.  O. S. B.  Teignmouth," and thus reveals that at some point the book was owned by the Benedictine monastery in Teignmouth, England.

The book bears the inscription, "For the use of Mary Gertrude.  April 1851," and the handwriting of this inscription seems to be the same as that of the manuscript.  The meditations are mostly in Latin, but there are a few written in French and a few in English.
