Thomas A. Whiting was born in Camilla, Georgia, on June 21, 1917. He received his A.B. from Emory University (1941), his B.D. from Yale Divinity School (1944), and his D.D. from Lambuth College (1963). At Emory he was President of the Emory Christian Association, Vice President of the Student Body, member of the Honor Council, and soloist with the Emory Glee Club. He was elected to Omicron Delta Kappa and the Senior Honor Society. He was also President of the Kappa Alpha Social Fraternity.
Dr. Whiting served in both the South and North Georgia Conferences of the United Methodist Church before retiring at Lake Junaluska, NC, in 1986. He has served many congregations, including Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Atlanta. In addition, he has had numerous contributions as a writer, including Sermons on the Prodigal Son, I Heard the Call to Preach, Don't Be Afraid of the Dark, and a Protestant Radio Hour series entitled Be Good to Yourself. Dr. Whiting has also served as a visiting professor at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University.
Dr. Whiting was formerly married to Martha Will Page. After her death, he married Helen Knarr Thurmond. Dr. and Mrs. Whiting currently reside at Lake Junaluska.
The collection consists of sermons delivered by Dr. Whiting at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church between 1965 and 1979. The sermons are typed with the occasional manuscript annotation. The topics covered in the sermons include biblical passages, church holidays, and other issues of relevance in contemporary Christianity.
