This collection consists of an undated draft of Alphonse Chapeau's dissertation The Letters of Manning to Gladstone, 1837-1851 and a draft of a rewritten introduction. The dissertation contains transcripts of the correspondence of Henry Edward Cardinal Manning and William Ewart Gladstone from 1837 to 1851. The bulk of the material deals with the period prior to Manning's conversion from Anglicism to Catholicism. The period leading up to Manning's conversion occurs at the same time as the Oxford Movement, although Chapeau does not make the Oxford Movement the main focus of this dissertation.
