Biographical Note

John Rudolph Brokhoff was born in Pottsville, Pennsylvania, on December 19, 1913.  He received an A.B. degree from Muhlenberg College in 1935; an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1938; an M.Div. from Philadelphia Lutheran Seminary, also in 1938; and an honorary D.D. from Muhlenberg College in 1951.  Brokhoff was ordained as a Lutheran minister in 1938 and served as pastor in Virginia, Georgia, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania before accepting the position of Professor of Homiletics at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, in 1965.  He retired in 1979.  Brokhoff died on December 8, 2003.

In addition to his work as pastor and seminary professor, Rev. Brokhoff served as president of the Christian Council of Atlanta (1950-1952); president of the Mecklenburg Minister's Association, Charlotte, North Carolina (1960-1961); secretary of the Protestant Radio-TV Center, Atlanta, Georgia (1948-1954); and board member of the Academy of Preachers, Philadelphia,  Pennsylvania (1982-1984).  He is also the author of several books and a 1966 recipient of the George Washington medal from the Freedom Foundation of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania.


Scope and Content Note

This collection consists primarily of sermons delivered from 1950 through 1978 when Brokhoff was pastor at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Atlanta, Georgia (1945-1955); St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Charlotte, North Carolina (1955-1962); and Trinity Lutheran Church in Lansdale, Pennsylvania (1962-1965).  Others were presented during the time that Brokhoff served as Professor of Homiletics at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta (1965-1979).  Sermon topics include world hunger, the Pentecost, faith healing, observance of the Sabbath, the Lord's Supper, and human rights.

Also included are copies of several  publications written by Rev. Brokhoff and others to which he contributed, a set of homiletical aids for series A, B, and C of the common lectionary, a series of "Sunrise Sermonettes" delivered on WSB-TV in Atlanta in 1975, and manuscript copies of workbooks from courses on Christian courtship and marriage.
