The Rev. Charles Wesley, D. D. was born September 25, 1793 to Samuel Wesley and Charlotte Lousia Martin. Wesley is the grandson of the Methodist leader and hymn-writer Charles Wesley. In 1824, he married Eliza Skelton and subsequently fathered four children, two of whom survived infancy: Eliza and Maria. Wesley was Subdean of the Chapel Royal at St. James Palace, London and Chaplain to Queen Victoria. He died September 14, 1859 at age 66.

This letter was written by Wesley on May 29, 1840 to George Roland in Edinburgh, Scotland.  In this humorous letter Wesley discussed personal matters, primarily the appointment of a mutual friend to a position and the effects of aging on one's personal appearance.
