John Pawson was born in England in November 1737. He became a Methodist preacher in 1762 and was ordained by John Wesley in 1785 for ministry in Scotland. He returned to England in 1787. After John Wesley's death, Pawson mediated controversies concerning the administration of   the Sacraments. In 1797 he revised Wesley's Large Minutes and this revision was accepted as the official statement of Methodist discipline. Pawson served as President of the British Methodist Conference in 1793 and again in 1801. He died on March 19, 1806.

This is a letter from John Pawson of Leeds to Charles Atmore of Staffordshire, written on June 28, 1800 in response to a letter from Atmore. In the letter Pawson mentions that one of his sermons has created some controversy. He also comments on William Myles' Chronological History of the People Called Methodist and on the expense of the upcoming annual conference in London.
