Biographical Note

Joseph Henry Jones was born June 5, 1893 in Earlestown, Cheshire, England. His family's financial circumstances forced him to leave school at age fourteen. During World War I he served in the Royal Medical Corps, then returned home and married Edith Waine on June 30, 1920.  The couple ran a hardware and iron mongery business, but were forced to give it up during the economic depression of the late1920s.  Jones then worked for a wrought iron company in the town of Southport until his retirement.  He also held the position of local preacher in the Methodist church for several years.

After his retirement Jones and his wife resided in Minehead, Somerset in a retirement home established for Methodist local preachers.  He spent several years touring Europe, the Middle East, and North America sketching churches and historical sites that were significant to him.  He died on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1980.

 Scope and Content Note

The papers of Joseph Henry Jones consist of drawings related to cathedrals, abbeys, churches, and historical sites, and writings, most of which are hand-copied from other sources.  The collection is divided into two series: I. Drawings and II. Writings.

Series one consists of pen and ink drawings of churches, cathedrals, and abbeys in England and miscellaneous drawings from Norway, the Holy Land, Iran, and Canada.  In addition, there are approximately 40 drawings of various buildings in England, including the homes of John and Charles Wesley and Francis Asbury.  No dates were found on any of the drawings.

The writings include two bound manuscript books and ca.80 sheets of loose leaf papers. One bound manuscript book is titled "The Dawn of Methodism" and is inscribed "From Dad Jones April 1975." It contains drawings of Methodist churches in England, along with a descriptive paragraph about each church.   The second bound manuscript book is a copybook that contains various religious writings and writings about churches and cathedrals in England and the United States.  The loose leaf papers include writings about churches and church history, plans for bible studies, and copies of poems and hymns.  Written materials focus primarily on Methodist church history and the persons who strongly influenced its growth, both in England and the United States.  Page 70 of the copybook is dated November 14, 1940.  No other dates were found.
