Historical  Note

Harry John Peckham (1841-1922) was born in Nyton, England to Sybella Jane and Charles Peckham-Peckham.  He attended Balliol College, Oxford.  Ordained into the ministry in 1871 he held positions at several parishes during his career including positions in Coventry, Henfield; Compton, Sussex; Biddendon, Kent; Nutley, Sussex; and finally as a licentiate preacher at the Diocese of Chichester in 1915.  Peckham and his wife Edith had three sons, Walter, Arthur and a third referred to as R. P.  Peckham died on Febrary 4, 1922 at the age of 81.

Scope and Content Note

The collection of diaries of Harry John Peckham (1975-1922) consists of six bound volumes recording the day to day activities of Reverend Peckham during most of his adult life. Missing, however, is a volume covering the period from May 1, 1880 through December 30, 1884. It was during this period, in 1882, that Peckham left Biddenden, Kent to assume the vicarage of Nutley, Sussex. The diaries provide an intimate and personal look at the life of an Anglican minister and his family. It was his habit to clip announcements of births and deaths from newspapers and to paste them in his diaries in addition to slipping in photos and notes. All additional items have been left where they were found. Three days before Peckham's death the daily entries were made by another unknown author. The author, probably Peckham's son, writes in the first person of Peckham's rapid decline and death. Taped at the end is Peckham's obituary clipped from the newspaper.
