Born in Dieppe, France on January 3, 1618, Jean Crasset was a member of the Society of Jesus, a professor of humanities and philosophy, and a successful preacher in Paris.  He joined the Jesuits in 1638 and was the author of many ascetical texts, including Methode d'oraison; Considérariones chrétiennes pour tous les hours de l'année; La chrétienne in solitude; and Histoire de l'eglise du japon.  Crasset died in Paris on January 4, 1692.

This volume is a Nineteenth Century handwritten translation of Crasset's work, La Manne du desert pour les personnes qui sont en retraite, which is a series of meditations for those entering on a religious retreat.  The translation is 348 pages and contains illustrations of ink drawings and an illustration from another source, glued into the first page.  A short selection of 37 pages follows, "Meditations on the Passion of Jesus Christ," with the chapter note: "O Vos omnes qui transîtis per viam.  Atténdite & videte si est dolor sicut dolor meus.  Consummatum est."  It contains an ink drawing of a cross with a ladder, wreath, spear, and rooster.  The motto, "Amor meus crucifuscus est," appears in a ribbon draped over the cross.  A book plate on the front cover reads, "Ex Libris Monasterii Sancte Scholasticae. O. S. B. Teignmouth."  The translator of the volume is unknown.
