Biographical Note
Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887), son of Lyman Beecher, was an American clergyman
born in Litchfield, Connecticut, in 1813. He was known as a powerful and convincing
speaker who commanded wide influence throughout the country. Along with his
sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, he was an abolitionist and a supporter of
women suffrage. He served the Plymouth Congregational Church in Brooklyn,
New York, from 1847 until his death in 1887.
Scope and Content Note
The collection consists of thirteen printed sermons clipped from various
newspapers. They include The Salem Gazette, January 17, 1860, untitled;
